"I immediately felt that the philosophy of the Bread and Puppet Theater and the social themes of universal peace woven in its performances would fit well within the fabric of the local culture, and will complement nicely the community empowerment philosophy of AMURT's programs," says Dharma Russafov, the NGO's Operational Coordinator. "Haitians are intuitively creative and artistic people who love dance, papier-maché, street spectacles, and social satire. Go to a Voodoo Ceremony or a Rara Festival and you will be transported in a world of powerful images and raw and exciting energy. Bread and Puppets blends very spontaneously all these elements so easily felt in Haiti, and gives the ordinary person the capacity to participate in a creative exchange of inspiration, social activism, humor, and powerful visualization". From April 21st to April 29th AMURT-Haiti will host a 7-day community workshop and public performance led by Peter Schumann, the Artistic Director of the award-winning Bread and Puppet Theater. Peter Schumann and three of his puppeteers will teach 10 female community activists from Commune Anse Rouge the art of papier-mâché puppetry, social drama, and dance. The workshop will culminate in several performances in selected villages and cities in Haiti, and will focus on the themes of self-empowerment, justice, social-service and peace.
